The Yellowstone Inspired Design: A Rustic Kitchen With a Coastal Decor Style
Creating a kitchen that perfectly balances the coastal aesthetic while capturing all that we love from the Dutton Ranch home itself is no small feat. The Dutton kitchen all wild west and exudes a genuine ranch vibe with plaid wallcovering, dark wood, and traditional furnishings – complete with cowboy hats by the door.
We particularly love that the natural daylight, social island, and visual interest in this kitchen, can all seamlessly translate into Beth’s beach house. To create the interior design look – it’s all about balancing the rustic, natural materials with a color palette integrating accents that captures the a bit of the sea and ranch equally.
With no further adieu, we present to you: Beth Dutton’s Coastal Western Decor Kitchen.
This cozy kitchen sings with rustic wood beams at the ceiling – drawing on the natural elements outside. The color palette is based in earthy tones that bring a bit of western flair, like the turquoise cabinets and copper pendants. A combination of wood and quartz stone accent counters bring balance (and cleanability!) to the space while luxury, modern appliances contrast the rustic design elements in the best way.
Rustic Western Kitchen Design: Creating the Kitchen Backdrop
Before we can bring in the decor – we need to develop the desired aesthetic for our kitchen. To do so, we’re starting with flooring, ceilings, cabinetry and counters. To really make this space feel like home for Beth, our inspiration for the heart of the home is none other than the Yellowstone ranch with its rustic charm.
The Perfect Color Palette
For this kitchen, we’re drawing inspiration from the sea and from the ranch to bring the space to life. From sunsets over the rolling hills and rivers gracefully cutting through mountains to the wild dunes on shore and waves crashing on the sandy beaches – these two terrains have more in common than at first glance.
Our palette consists of a creamy white, bright teal, soft beige, warm brown, and a vibrant copper. Together this palette captures the visual appeal of both locales and creates a visually interesting aesthetic.
Flooring and Ceiling Details
The wide-plank hardwood flooring, reminiscent of weathered barn wood, lends a rustic and inviting character to the space. Its natural warmth complements the other wooden elements in the room, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. The exposed faux wooden beams, stained a deep, rich hue, add a touch of drama and character to the kitchen. They draw the eye upward, creating a sense of spaciousness and height.
Cabinetry and Countertops
The upper cabinets, crafted from natural wood, showcase the beauty of the grain and texture – mirroring the floors for cohesiveness. The lower cabinets have a custom finish inspired by this four door cabinet adding a pop of color that creates a visually dynamic composition. Light-colored stone countertops provide a bright and airy counterpoint to the darker wood elements. Their smooth, polished surface adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to the space.
Furniture and Lighting
Natural woven stools are perfect for gathering around the kitchen island, we love the style . Even in a small kitchen, bringing in two small scale chairs can make the space feel that much more inviting. For accent lighting at the kitchen island, we’re bringing in a pop of copper to create a focal point while enhancing the ambiance in the space and adding a touch of reflectivity.
Home Decor to Bring Out the Dutton In Beth’s Design Style
Now that our base aesthetic and hard finishes are selected, we’re ready to bring in a combination of modern and rustic decor to really bring the spirit of the west alive in Beth’s kitchen. Follow along for inspiration on how to create this look in your home.
Dinner Is Served
Dinner just tastes better when it’s served on a dinnerware set with style. These dinner plates are a subtle piece of cowboy decor with the longhorn design that will elevate any meal. Pair it with a set of recycled drinking glasses for a refined (and earth-friendly) look! Last but not least, round out the island with a unique design for your island center piece using an vintage dough bowl.
Designer Detail: The colors in the border of the plate start to mimic the copper in the light fixtures above the island. These small details are what makes every room feel like it was done by a professional.
Kitchen Textiles
Interior designers know the secret to a well-decorated room is adding a little bit of softness – even in your kitchen. One of the easiest ways to add pattern, texture, and color without overcommitting on more permanent pieces like your cabinets and counters, is through textiles.
Saltsy’s latest collection Saltwater Sage offers a variety of textiles to bring in that coastal western aesthetic and complement this color palette perfectly. The hand towel trio, Damask, Print, and Ribbons patterns collectively increase the texture and add a sense of warmth to the space.
We selected a southwestern print washable runner rug for the kitchen which marries the blue, copper, and teal tones perfectly. For the apron and trivet set, we opted to stick with a coordinating aesthetic as the hand towels to create a bit of continuity in the space and balance the look.
Cooking Essentials
Whether you’re in the remote wilderness of Montana or on the South Carolina coast – cooking and baking in your kitchen should be a peaceful and enjoyable experience. To make this a reality, it’s important to have some of the essentials on hand to make it convenient and easy too!
First up is cutting boards; while we love wood, we’re partial to glass for it’s cleanability and longevity. For Beth, we’re going with the snow leopard print inspired by the Dutton Ranch and specifically, Beth’s wardrobe. The faux leather look is just lovely and adds a touch of western flair.
Whether you’re using and iPad or a traditional cookbook – keeping your recipe handy its crucial to convenience, which is why we love this cookbook stand by Cailini Coastal. We love finding practical pieces that look beautiful – this stand can stay out all the time!
Lastly, this earthenware mixing bowl set really brings chic simplicity to the space, providing a neutral balance to the color palette. Pair it with an Acacia Wood Utensil Set to bring in a little warmth and it’ll look like a curated photo shoot every time you cook!
